Contemporary symbolic painting that moves between abstraction and figurative representation.
I grew up surrounded by the grayness of life behind the Iron Curtain, exposed to the dark, often macabre imagery of artists like ZdzisΕaw BeksiΕski and Dariusz Zawadzki. Perhaps my attraction to dreamlike beauty, softness, and muted colors is, in its own way, a rebellion against that darkness.
Born and raised in Poland, Bennett originally pursued a career in science, earning a PhD in ecology and working as a research scientist before turning her attention more fully to art. Her scientific background continues to influence the way she approaches painting. Close observation, curiosity about natural patterns, and an interest in how small details reveal larger stories are central to her work. Her experience of living between cultures has also shaped her artistic language.
Moving from Poland to the United States meant learning to navigate a new language, culture, and sense of belonging. These experiences find their way into her paintings through imagined landscapes, layered textures, recurring circles, architectural forms, and traces of memory.Bennett builds her paintings gradually, allowing forms to emerge, change, and sometimes disappear beneath new layers. She is interested in the balance between structure and spontaneity, what we recognize and what remains open to interpretation.Although her paintings often have a quiet atmosphere and soft colors, they invite viewers to look beyond their immediate visual beauty. Rather than telling a fixed story, Bennett leaves room for people to bring their own memories, associations, and interpretations to the work.Her paintings have been exhibited in galleries and art institutions throughout California, including the Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, and the Los Angeles Art Association's 825 Gallery. She is also active in the Santa Barbara arts community through exhibitions, collaborations, and arts organizations.Danuta Bennett is a Santa Barbaraβbased contemporary artist whose paintings bring together abstraction, elements of nature, and storytelling. Working primarily with acrylic and mixed media, she builds richly layered compositions where organic forms, architectural structures, and traces of the human figure create a visual language that moves between the familiar and the imagined.
